What is vaginal thrush?

Vaginal mycosis, also known as vaginal fungus, is one of the most common fungal infections in the intimate area. This infection is usually caused by the yeast Candida albicans. This fungus leads to inflammation of the vulva, accompanied by unpleasant symptoms such as itching, a whitish, crumbly discharge and pain when urinating. Vaginal fungus is not only a physical but often also a psychological discomfort and requires appropriate medical treatment.

Causes of vaginal thrush

Transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact, but other factors also play a role. These include

  • An imbalance in the natural vaginal flora, often caused by excessive intimate hygiene or the use of intimate deodorants
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy or the menopause, which can affect the acidic environment of the vagina.
  • Taking antibiotics, which can change the vaginal flora and thus promote a fungal infection.
  • Tight-fitting clothing and underwear made of synthetic materials that create a warm and humid climate in which fungi thrive.

Symptoms of vaginal thrush

The symptoms of a vaginal fungus are typically:

  • Intense itching and burning in the area of the vulva and vulval lips.
  • Redness and swelling of the affected skin areas.
  • A whitish, crumbly discharge.
  • Pain during urination and sexual intercourse.

Treatment of vaginal fungus

Vaginal thrush is usually treated with antifungal medication, which is specifically effective against fungi. The duration of treatment can vary, but a one-week course of treatment usually leads to a significant improvement in symptoms.

Cleaning with an intimate douche for vaginal fungus

During an infection with vaginal fungus, gentle cleansing of the intimate area with an intimate douche can help to alleviate the symptoms. Using water without additional cleansing agents helps to maintain the natural pH of the vulva and can therefore promote the healing process. It is important to do this gently so as not to further irritate the affected areas.

Prevention of vaginal fungus

Experts recommend the following to prevent vaginal yeast infections:

  • Hygiene practices such as using an intimate douche that support the natural environment of the vulva, such as using water without aggressive cleansers.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing and underwear made from natural materials.
  • A healthy diet that supports the body and strengthens the immune system.

Conclusion

Vaginal thrush is a common and usually easily treatable infection. By better understanding the causes, symptoms and treatment methods, affected individuals can effectively help to alleviate their symptoms and prevent reinfection. During an infection, cleansing with an intimate douche offers a gentle and pleasant way to support hygiene in the intimate area without disturbing the natural balance of the vulva flora.
